The QVMX Club was originally founded in early 1995 by founding members Michael Bamford and Mark Beckman. They saw a need for a club dedicated solely for vintage motocross and wanted to provide six or more race days in the year (BMCC was currently catering for three MX race days that year) as well as find new natural terrain venues.
The original inception was to create a club to promote vintage motocross racing on natural terrain tracks for riders over the age of 30 in a no-points, no-sheep stations, low cost format that could accommodate and attract the serious and novice racer alike, with an emphasis on fun, socialising and the restoring of vintage bikes.
The first race meetings were a casual affair held at smaller properties in outer Brisbane areas. These venues soon fell into the hands of developers and it wasn’t until the Veresdale property became available as an ongoing track that the club really got on its feet.
This was a time when machines were relatively available, compared to today’s market, and bikes could be had for as little as a carton of XXXX. In the early days 20 or so riders turned up at a paddock with a few witches hats, a bungy cord, fuel and the obligatory esky to race all day until either their bikes or bodies gave out.
Tracks like Veresdale were virgin natural terrain courses that provided a grassy, loamy, tractable surface that suited our bikes and the 70’s style of racing.
A small but dedicated band of Club Members and officials provided the avenue for the club to grow into what is now a much more advanced and professional Club which is now entering it’s 11th year of racing.
The QVMX Club today runs rotating tracks at Rocksberg, Coles Creek, Tamborine, occasionally Conondale and hopefully this year, more tracks will become available to us.
Courses are pre-set before race day to MAQ Standards by racers that know vintage bikes and while the average age for riders is 40, the minimum age for racing is 16 years (senior).
The QVMX Club welcomes everyone who is interested in our sport, male and female racers alike and as always, our emphasis is on fun.
Happy racing.
